About Us
In 2001 Michael and Onuma Gift launched ClassicThai.com. At that time we saw ClassicThai as a compliment to our sister website, TeakMarket.com. Teakmarket focused on teakwood doors and ClassicThai would focus on other Thai products.
About a year later Onuma began to focus her efforts on new developments in ClassicThai after we received a few inquiries about jewelry items. We have provided products and services related to precious stones (sapphires and rubies), semi-precious stones (particularly zircons, NOT cubic zirconium) and fashion pearl / synthetic stone jewelry. We are now a leading source for information and access to Jewelry items made and sold in Thailand.
Around 2005 we had several inquiries about high quality pearl jewelry. This opened a door for us that we did not anticipate BUT we accepted the challenge and it has completely refocused our operations.
In our effort to get the best quality for the best price we started with the Jewelry Wholesale Markets in Bangkok. We were able to get very good quality pearls at a very attractive price. However, we learned that these wholesalers acquired their stocks from sources in the wholesale jewelry area in Hong Kong. So we went to Hong Kong and found that we could get better quality at a lower price. But the Hong Kong wholesalers purchased their stocks from the wholesale markets in Beijing so we were off to Beijing. Once again, better quality at a lower price.
Finally, in an unrelated meeting with some Chinese from the PRC, we were informed of the location of several of the pearl farms in China. These are in some areas between Shanghai and Beijing. We were given an introduction to several of the distributors. We visited their operations and we were amazed at the value we were able to acquire. Wonderful AAA quality freshwater pearls at a very attractive price. When we visit these locations we are generally the only non-Chinese in the area.
We still acquire some of our jewelry in Beijing. We still acquire some of our jewelry in Bangkok and Northern Thailand. But the pearl strands we purchase are purchased from the distributors at the pearl farms in interior China. We travel there several times a year. Next year we will expand our products to include Sea Water pearls from the coast of Southern China.
Most of our pearl strands are strung and tied in Macau and Thailand by our own staff. From time to time we do have the pearl vendors assist us in the tying process. Each time we carefully inspect the quality of the string and the quality of the process employed.
We have taken the effort to find these sources so that we can provide you with the highest quality at the lowest price. We have side-stepped several middlemen and the end result is better value for money.
